Debasis attended various schools in West Bengal and eventually completed his schooling at Bodhjung School, Agartala in 1963. This was the higher secondary school examination ( as it was known then) and needed 11 years of schooling. This was in the science stream and included English, Bengali, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics papers. His scores placed him in the top 1% of the examinees appearing for this examination from The Board Of Secondary Education, West Bengal.

He was admitted to the Faculty of Engineering & Technology of Jadavpur University, Kolkata for Bachelor Of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering based on the higher secondary results. Used to be a 5 year full time course at this time and he finished in 1968 with a 73.4% score.

He went back to school 9 years later, to do a masters from IIT, Kanpur. He completed his MS in EE (Computer Science major) in 1979 with a CPA of 8.55.
